On Monday night my sister and I went to see RadioLab Live: Symmetry at NYU Skirball Center. I’m a huge fan of RadioLab so I snatched up some tickets during the WNYC member presale. The show was great.

An empty stage before the show starts

It was basically Jad sitting at a table with a macbook, a script, and some sort of sound cue machine. On the other side was Robert (aka Bobby K) sitting at a music stand with his script.ﾂ I guess I never really thought about how much of the show is scripted, but it’s definitely interesting to see how they mix in the audio clips and the chemistry and interactions of the hosts.

What really made the show special were the illustrations and animations projected in the background and the musical stylings of cellist Zoe Keatings.

Jad and Zoe. Robert is being blocked out by someone's gigantic head.

The subject of the show was the search for Symmetry and I don’t want to go into what its about since you’ll soon be able to listen yourself. The description RadioLab provides is:

Hosts Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich will be performing an upcoming episode on symmetry, and how it shapes our very existence窶杷rom the origin of the universe, to what we see when we look in the mirror. We’ll search for love in ancient Greece, head to modern-day Princeton for a look inside our brains, and revisit an unlikely headline from the Oval Office circa 1979.

I really enjoyed not only the performance, but the content. And I’d be very interested to know how people, who attended the show, changed their hair parts the next day.

It was amazing to see how quickly these came together – as I watched briefly as I came into work, got lunch, and went home. It was no small canvas either.ﾂ The art of advertising murals is being lost as vinyl banners have become prevalent due to their cost and quick installation.

Bank of America has a program called Museums on Us. It used to be that they picked one weekend a year and you could get into a bunch of museums for free by showing your bank card. Now they’re doing it every first weekend of the month. Some of the big museums like the MET want you to donate $20 to get in so this is good way to get some free culture.

http://promotions.bankofamerica.com/museums/

In the NYC area they’ve got Liberty Science Center, the MET, Newark Museum, Bronx Zoo, New York Aquarium,ﾂ etc.

Yesterday I met up with my friend Ryan (and eventually his wife as well) in Soho. They are visiting from California. We did some shopping, had a snack at Rice to Riches, and walked to 11 Spring Street.

11 Spring Street has been an unoffical mecca of NY street art for ages, but it was recently bought and will be turned into condos. So the owners decided to invite artists to paint the inside of the building and it will be open for 3 days to the public before they sheetrock over everything. Unfortunately, I’m leaving for Utah tomorrow morning and I won’t be back until Tuesday so I’ll miss it. We were trying to find someone to take us in but we didn’t have any luck.

Anyway Wooster on Spring is being organized by the Wooster Collective. Their article on it being a time capsule is pretty cool. Also, there is an article on the whole project in the NY Times.

You can see all of my photos on flickr.

Last, last weekend I had plans to do “something” with my sister Vanessa. We didn’t actually have plans for or plans. I was thinking that there were a couple of art exhibits I wanted to see, but Saturday was supposed to be too nice to spend in a museum. I was also thinking of hiking or something, when I had a brilliant idea.

I’ve always wanted to go visit the Cloisters, but it’s a bit of a pain in the ass to get up to Fort Tryton Park. I suggested it to my sister and she was down with that idea, especially after I mentioned I could get us in free with my work ID. She picked me up and it was smooth sailing. We event got a parking space right in front.

If you haven’t heard of the Cloisters, it’s a medieval art and architecture museum that is part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I was actually reminded that I wanted to go their by Tim Gunn. It’s a modern building with parts of real medieval buildings interegrated into it. There are doorways, chapels, and, of course, cloisters. The museum has a lot of outdoor sections and gardens so you spend as much time indoors and out.

I personally liked the architectural stuff the best. Although the religious art is very interesting, I’ve seen tons of that sort of stuff in my trips to Europe. I liked the garden. It had an interesting mix of common plants, some that I even have in my garden, and unusual plants I’ve never heard of. I love the of courtyard/sheltered type gardens. I want to make one.

After we left the museum we walked around the park for a little bit. Oh, and it seemed everyone in that museum had fancy cameras. I couldn’t find my elph and I didn’t want to bring my dslr, so I stole my sister’s crappy rollei to take these photos.

You can see them all on flickr.
