Find the Future at NYPL

A month (or so) ago I applied to take part in the Find the Future game at the main branch of the New York Public Library. I found out in late April that I was one of the 500 chosen to play the overnight scavenger game. It starts at 8pm friday when we get locked in the Schwartzman Building and I’m so excited! I will probably be posting updates during the game and everyone can play online starting May 21.

A few people asked me what I wrote so I’m posting it. It’s nothing special. From what I can tell something like 4000 people applied and 500 were chosen.

By the year 2021, I will become the first person to…
successfully combine cupcake baking, letterpress printing, and knitting into a single marketable hobby: the Personal Crafty Trinity.

What drives you… and what strengths do you have that will help you achieve your 2021 goal?

I live for crafting and I dive wholeheartedly into whatever interests me. From baking divine treats that make all my facebook friends drool, to the 800lb antique press in my basement, to the my burgeoning stash of yarn – I’m all about creativity.

Postagram

I’ve always thought a good business in a touristy area would be a print a postcard kiosk where you can take your photos, print one, write it up and mail it all in one place. Well it seems that Postagram is taking that even further. They’ve just released an iphone app that lets you mail your Instagram photos as a postcard to anywhere in the world for $.99. You can add a short message and the photo pops out.

So as long as I have a wifi or 3g connection I’ll be able to grab one of my photos and send it out to my Mom! This definitely beats trying to track down stamps when you’re in a foreign country. I’ll definitely be giving this a whirl!

New Running Shoes

On Saturday I went to go hang out with my sister Natalie down by her place. We had a long list of things to accomplish. Our first stop was Roadrunner Sports to get me fitted with a new pair of running shoes. I’ve been running in my Nike crosstrainers which are old and never really meant for running.

New running shoes

I had to wait about 15 minutes for my turn to have their “Shoe Dog” fitting. This involved me getting my foot measured – I was told I’m a 9.5. I wear 9 in regular shoes. Then I stood barefoot on a pad that measured foot pressure. There I learned that my right foot is flat and my left foot has a normal arch. I put 51% of my weight on my right foot and most of my weight is on my heels. After that I ran barefoot on a treadmill. You also answer a bunch of questions on a giant touchscreen monitor. When I was done they did video analysis on my treadmill running. I was told my right foot turns out a bit and my left is straight and my achilles is straight.

So I was told to get a neutral shoe and that their custom insoles would be good since my feet are different. However they were out of my insole size so I got a raincheck. I tried on a bunch of sneakers and ended up buying Asics Nimbus 12. With Natalie’s VIP account and coupons they ended up being about $100. Oh, and they’re hot pink. The sales guy was pushing the Nike Vomero 6 as his favorite and they were comfortable but I didn’t like how they kind of collapsed when you stepped on the balls of your feet.

After shoe buying we grabbed lunch at Ocean Cafe. Then we were off to Lowes to pick up some lights for my seed starting. We hit a park up and did a 3 mile run to try out my new sneakers. (They were great). Then we grabbed Kyle and went to the Tinton Falls Golf Center to hit some balls. They had brand new range balls and that’s what I blame for my terribleness. Finally we had a yummy dinner at a seafood place before I headed home.

My Sister’s Graduate Art Show

Today I went to the opening of my sister Natalie’s graduate art show. It was awesome and her work is amazing and I’m very proud of her. I’ve seen her pots before but this is the first time I’ve seen a comprehensive work under a single theme. I was really impressed by how she created such a variety of shapes and sizes with a cohesive style.

March Training Totals

I don’t think I’ve mentioned on here yet that I’m doing a triathlon this summer. My two sisters are also doing it but I plan to beat them and with the Inaugural Vosky Cup (which Natalie is tasked with creating). The event isn’t until August but I started my training earlier this month.

Swimming and biking aren’t too hard but I haven’t ran seriously since I was in high school. So I started 3 weeks ago and now I can pretty much run 30 minutes straight. I’m not quite to doing the full 5k but I’m sure I’ll be there soon.

Anyway I was checking out my training totals for the month and it’s awesome to see I’ve done over 100 miles this month of which 28 were running! Not too shabby. I am also going to start increasing the amount of time I’m training so those numbers will be going up.

Some other cool fun facts…I’m now the mayor of my gym on fourquare and according the LA Fitness iphone app I’ve been to the gym 19/30 days or 63%. Not bad!

I’m not currently eating any sugar, so I got my fix tonight by shopping for some new cookbooks! One should be here on Friday, one is back ordered and two are pre-orders. I’m looking forward to cooking up some new treats.

Another Reason to Go Back to New Zealand

Air New Zealand is one of the more social media savvy airlines out there (remember the AirNZ naked videos?). Now they’ve hired Richard Simmons on to lead their airline safety video. Just another reason for me to go back. Plus they are very free with the wine pouring in economy on long haul flights!
